why does visretain function differently when plotting in 2k5?

    If visretain is set to 0 I can not plot the items that I have
    frozen/thawed. Even though the print preview is correct the actual plot
    reverts back to the layers settings from when the file was saved last,
    and also disregards any layer changes made to xrefs entirely.

    Was this done on purpose? And if so what could possibly be the reason
    for this change? It does not occur on my machines with older versions of
    autocad...
