I exported contacts from both iPhone and Outlook, and now there are lots of duplicates. I need a reliable method to clean them without breaking contact formatting.

This problem also appeared when I tried to export my contacts from my iPhone and Outlook. After merging all my contacts into one VCF file, I found that the same contacts appeared twice but with some slight differences such as one contact having an email and the other having a phone number.
I first tried cleaning it manually by opening the file and checking contacts one by one, but it didn’t last long. Too many entries and it’s easy to miss duplicates when the format isn’t exactly the same.

Later I used WholeClear vCard Duplicate Remover just to see if it helps. It basically went through the file and removed repeated contacts based on matching fields. Before doing anything, I made a backup because I didn’t want to risk losing anything.

Duplicate contacts are a common issue when combining vCard (VCF) exports from both an iPhone and Outlook because each platform may format contact information differently. Before making any changes, create a backup of your original VCF files.

If you're working with a small number of contacts, you can import them into Outlook, iCloud Contacts, or Google Contacts and use their built-in duplicate detection and merge features. For larger contact lists, a dedicated duplicate contact manager can save a lot of time.

If you're comfortable editing files manually, you can also merge multiple VCF files into one and then remove duplicate entries based on unique fields such as email address, phone number, or contact name. After cleaning up the contacts, export a new VCF file to ensure all devices use the same, updated contact list.

Keeping a single "master" contact list and avoiding imports from multiple sources at the same time can also help prevent duplicate contacts from appearing again.
