Hi everyone, working with a number of DWG files that need to be converted to PDF for sharing with clients and stakeholders who don't have CAD software installed. The PDFs need to maintain the correct scale, line weights, and layer visibility so they look as close to the original drawing as possible when viewed or printed.

Not sure what is the most reliable approach to convert dwg to pdf on Windows, especially when dealing with multiple files at once. Curious whether there's a built-in method within the Autodesk ecosystem that handles this well, or if there's a preferred workflow the community uses to get clean, accurate PDF output from DWG files without losing any drawing detail.

If you need to convert DWG to PDF on Windows PC, using a dedicated dwg converter software is the easiest way. It lets you batch convert drawings and keep the layout and scale accurate.

My favorite dwg to pdf converter: https://www.pctipdaily.com/convert-dwg-to-pdf

P.S. Stay away from the online tool as the PDF quality sucks and it is not safe!

Using Microsoft Print to PDF to convert DWG to PDF is a totally valid question, especially since you're looking for a free method that doesn't require installing extra stuff. The short answer is: yes, you can use it, but it might not be the absolute best tool for the job.

To convert DWG to PDF. Microsoft Print to PDF is basically a "virtual printer" that's built right into Windows. So when you're in a program and you go to print (you know, hit Ctrl + P), you can pick "Microsoft Print to PDF" from the list of printers instead of a real one.

Why it could work for you:

It's Free and Built-in: Like you wanted, it's already there on your Windows PC. You don't have to download or pay for anything extra.

It Gets the Job Done: If all you need is a basic PDF to share or review, it will create one for you.

How about using LibreCAD if i want to convert DWG to PDF? Please describe it in your own words. Please ensure that "convert DWG to PDF" appears in the content of the narration. Please describe in a casual tone.

LibreCAD is completely free, works on Windows, and can export your drawings directly to PDF. You've basically got a few ways to do it, which is pretty handy:

    • The Simple Way: Just go to File > Export and pick PDF as the format. Easy peasy.

    • The Classic Way: Use the File > Print option and choose a PDF printer, like the built-in "Microsoft Print to PDF" we talked about earlier.
    • The Geeky Way: If you're feeling adventurous, there's a command-line tool built into LibreCAD (dxf2pdf) that can convert files without even opening the main program window. This is awesome for batch processing multiple files.
LibreCAD can be a free and capable tool to convert DWG to PDF, especially if your files are simple and use older DXF formats. But just be aware that it's not a magic bullet. If you're working with complex or modern DWG files, you might run into some frustrating hiccups. It's definitely worth a shot for a free option, but don't be surprised if you need to do a little troubleshooting along the way.

If you have a Google Account, Google Drive can be used as a cloud-based tool to convert dwg to pdf. It offers a browser-based conversion solution that doesn't require downloading any additional desktop conversion tools.
How to Convert DWG to PDF
    1. Upload the DWG file to Google Drive.
    2. Right-click the file, select Open with, then pick AutoCAD or Google Drive Viewer if the option shows up.
    3. Tap File, then choose Download as PDF if the viewer supports this export feature.
This cloud approach lets you finish basic drawing format shifts online easily. It fits casual, simple DWG conversion tasks when you do not want to install dedicated software.
    Pros
    • No need to install software locally
    • Accessible from any device as long as you can log in to Google Drive
    Cons
    • Poor compatibility with complex or newer versions of DWG files
    • Original drawing layers are not fully preserved when exported to PDF
    • Some DWG files cannot be opened with the built-in viewer

QCAD is an open-source 2D CAD software that can open DWG drawing files and export them to PDF format to convert DWG to PDF. It also supports offline, local drawing editing, ensuring consistent output results every time you convert dwg to pdf.
Instructions: Install the software on your computer, click File → Open and select the target DWG file, go to File → Export and select PDF as the output format, adjust custom parameters—including page size and drawing scale—and then click Export to complete the conversion process.
Its advantages include: a lightweight version that is fully featured and optimized for 2D drafting; the ability to adjust page size and scale settings when exporting to PDF; and the ability to work offline without an internet connection.
Its disadvantages include: support for 2D design only, with no 3D drafting tools; and incomplete compatibility with the latest versions of DWG files.
This allows you to work on DWG drawings locally and export PDF files while offline. This feature is ideal for users who frequently work with simple 2D engineering sketches, as well as those who need a reliable offline tool for converting drawing formats,

LibreOffice is an open-source office suite that can handle CAD files through extensions. By installing a third-party extension called CAD Import, you can open DWG files directly within the application.
To use this method, you must first install the software, then search for and add the extension. Once the setup is complete, simply open the DWG file in the software, then select File → Export as PDF to complete the process.
This method allows you to convert dwg to pdf without purchasing expensive commercial software. However, please note that this method requires manual configuration of the extension, and not all versions of DWG files may be supported when attempting to convert dwg to pdf.
