Time to upgrade again soon. Is AMD out, or not? Athlon Phenom or Athlon
64? Last time I upgraded AMD was the top choice. that was a while ago.

What is the favorite Intel CPU for built machines for SW? Core2Duo,
    core2Quad?
    Dual CPU or Single?

Stability is more important than performance.

    Intel is in ATM
You might like to hold off your decision until the new Nehalem processor
line is out ( fairly soon) to see how they perform in comparison to the
    Core2Duo for SW
These are not compatible with 775 socket mobo though and will probably be
    available at premium $ initially
I have just built a E8500 pc and I am pretty sure Matt Lombard recently
brought a XI box with one -check his blog ( the E8600 is the last of that
    line)
Quads are in vogue for rendering, analysis and such

Sorry to say, but Intel is on top right now. They got out the big
hammer and let it drop. The Nehalem might be suited for SW because it
shuts down some of its cores and puts all the juice into one when
running single threaded apps. This may just be for energy or it may
help in speed. Don't know. I think it may also put the memory
controller on chip like AMD did.

Time to wait if you can.

my new Dell M6300 ultra hot cad station, with Intel Centron duo core..
is slower than my old Compaq with cheap video card AMD cpu laptop.

Intel says they will have a better graphics friendly chip out in late
2009... I wont buy it. Ill be looking for an AMD machine.

Initially, Nehalem will be for high-end dual socket systems only.
Mainstream desktop systems won't be out until H2 2009. If you're in
the market for a Xeon system, I'd hold off, but if you're looking for
a high-end UP desktop (and want to be under 4K or so) get a fast Core2
    Duo or Quad.

    Phil,

    I just recommended a Dell 32bit workstation/nvidia quadro machine to a
customer, based on some problems they were having with a homebuilt gamer
machine. They have not been impressed with the performance as expected.
Less SW problems/crashes, but not blazingly fast either.

Unfortunately I can't wait much longer than a few weeks/month. What AMD
or Pentium would you recommend NOW? I have been told, mostly by Non SW
users that the AMD's have not kept pace performance wise since ATI
bought them. I don't give a rip about a 5-15 performance hit, or
whatever it is, as long as the system is stable. I have five machines.
all about the same age. Four are pentiums. The AMD/ASUS machine is 5X
    more stable.

I have also heard from SW power users that the quadcores don't really do
much for SW. better off with a 2X core2duo with SW.

If on the other hand ATI has screwed the AMD stability then I will go Intel.

One can never have enough power with Parametric-history based
modeling. The problem isn't the hardware.

Having just contradicted yourself yet again we know you are the problem.
It's the total lack of clues & the loose nut.

I have just bought a new machine with the single E8600 and 8gb of Ram.
    Works really well.

OK, so I have always been impressed with ASUS. Currently looking at the
    P5Q Deluxe P45. Opinions/experience or recommend a better/stable mainboard?
