own solidworks 2004 paid subscription ie telephone support and updates last
year of about £1000 - think this is a bit steep, any advice welcome on where
i could get a good advisory service or books etc to help me along.

The key question you have to ask yourself is if you do not upgrade along
with your customers will they quit using you, or if your suppliers have
issues. Remember the key thing is that you cannot bring in newer SW files if
you are on a older version.

You could thank yourself for not getting Pro/E which has a small maintenance
fee of nearly 1.5 times the SolidWorks amount....Of course you could have
gotten AutoDesks Inventor and save about $100us, but you probably would have
gotten a lot less features and had more reason to use tech support.

And you don't have to pay it if you know the product and have no questions.
Folks like that pay because they want to get the latest service packs and
major releases without having to buy the software over and over.
