For anyone who may be familiar with this software...
(That would most likely be you, Mr. Puckett... ;)

I installed ScopeEdit on my new machine (OS: Win XP Professional) the other
day. It seemed to be running okay.

Then I installed all the latest updates for Windows...

After that, when I tried to open any 'folded' .se file, the program
semi-hangs. It seems that the menu items are working, too. I can see the
file-tree structure in the left-hand pane, and even select any of the
sub-links from there - yet NOTHING is displayed in the main text-editing
pane. The individual file pages simply won't display. The reason I say
"semi-hangs" above is that the red "Scope Edit" logo never disappears, no
matter what is selected after opening a file. Just plain weird.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ScopeEdit with the exact same
    results.

ScopeEdit WAS working properly on a previous Win XP install - though I don't
know if it had all the Windows updates installed.

If you do use ScopeEdit, have you ever seen this type of behavior or know
what might cause it? I haven't contacted the software company yet - (I'll
do that if necessary, but since they have 'moved on' to developing a
different editing program, I'm doubtful that they may have a ready answer
regarding this issue.) Just thought I'd ask here first.

    Thanks,
    David Kozina

    David,
May not be related but after I did the latest WinXP updates over the
week-end I was have trouble with a few other non-Microsoft apps. I ended up
restoring back to a few days before.

    David,

I can't help you with your install problem, but was wondering how you like
ScopeEdit? I downloaded a trial version of it a couple of years ago, but at
that time it was way more than I needed. Since then, I've written a lot
more code and am now having trouble managing all of it.

At first I kept all my general toolbox functions in one file and all my
short command functions "c:" in another file. But those files have gotten
so big that they have become cumbersome to manage. I found myself at times,
unable to quickly find functions that I knew I have wrote somewhere. I even
found that I had cut and pasted different versions of the same functions
within my files. Recently I broke up my toolbox file into smaller files
just to be able to kept track of all of it -- Plotting functions, Layer
    functions, etc.

Does ScopeEdit help in this regards? If so, would you care to elaborate
    please?

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    David,

Thanks for explaining how ScopeEdit works and attaching the screenshots.
You inspired me to take another look at SE. After a long internet search, I
finally found a demo version still kicking around --- Version 1.8 After
installing and playing around with it for awhile, I remembered why during my
first trial of SE a couple years ago, I had decided not to keep using it:
The help is sooo confusing, I couldn't figure out how to run it. Anyhow,
with the info from your posts, I manage to figure it out: Highlight a bunch
of text in the right window, hit F7, type a description, and bingo the
selected text folds up into a hyperlink in the left window. Cool!

But after playing around with v1.8 awhile, I experienced a critical error.
SE locked up when I tried to reposition one of the hyperlinks in the left
window, using the mouse to drag and drop. I'm testing on my home PC using
Windows 98 (I know, a dinosaur). SE's readme file states that it was
designed for 486 machines running Win95/97 (yes 97!) or NT 3.51/4.0

I downloaded the Interspector Demo from www.loginov.com , hoping that this
newer version would eliminate the error. So far so good. Interspector
seems to be overkill for what I need, but it's only $99. In regards to the
problems you've been experiencing running SE on XP, perhaps its time to give
up the old 486 version and upgrade?

Anyhow I'm not sure I going to spend the dough for SE just yet, as I prefer
TextPad for editing. (What I really like to see is for TextPad to add this
"folding tree" feature.) Currently, I load the files I'm working on in
VLIDE *and* TextPad. Do my editing in TextPad, do loading and debugging in
VLIDE. Having SE along means using three editors simultaneously, a little
    bit too much to handle.

I wasn't able to find any SE tips from Michael Puckett via searching the
NG's. Have you got something archived you can post or forward?

    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Steve Doman
