Save layout with all visible objects in all viewports to new dwg

I am trying to find an easy way to create a new drawing of just what is on a
single layout. The layout will have multiple viewports and some objects on
visible layers in each viewport will be not shown by viewports but retained
for reference in modelspace. I can get pretty close by creating a wblock of
the model space objects in each viewport and then creating a second wblock
of the paperspace layout or uses design center to add the layout
(w/viewports) to the new wblocked drawing but I don't see what can't be
selected thru the view ports. I know I can expand the viewport in 2005 but
this seems clumsy. Does anyone have a routine to do what I am trying to do?
