problem importing DWG with polylines

I am starting to use Solidworks 2005. (I've been through the 2004
tutoral, and used 2003 for a month about 2 years ago). So, I am a bit
    of a novice.

I am attempting to import a simple DWG that has a drawing of a man.
The head/neck/arms/etc are all drawn as individual closed polylines.
My intent is to create a posable version of him in SW.

When I import the dwg into a new sketch I get a series of arcs with
all their endpoints laying in a single horizontal line. It looks
    nothing like the original drawing.

I've tried every option I can think of... the default settings,
makeing the merge poits option large & smaller. Not merging points,
    adding or not adding constraings.

Does the DWG file import feature work with polylines? Any ideas what
    is wrong?

Explode the polylines into individual arcs and lines and save with a
different name. Try opening the new DWG.

BTW, there are downloadable poseable SW people on various websites already.
Making even a simple articulated figure isn't a trivial thing for a novice.

Thanks for the reply, and also the advice on the articulated figure.

I did eventually import the polylines. While they were 2-d
polylines, they were not on the world coordinate system, and that is
what SW was getting confused over. Moving the polylines to the WCS
inside AutoCAD solved the import problem.

I've just posted another topic on this. In this case, I am only
doing 3d (what I've read as skeletal modeling) and also hoping that
sticking with 2d will make the process simpler. Also, once the man is
posed, he will not be changed again through the design process.
