    Hello,

    Rant on...........

Old Way: SW Website - allows you to download model - complete with
    configurations and design tables.

New Way: 3DContent Central Website - you only can pick a single
configuration to download at a time.

Old Way: You can add model to Toolbox Browser (My Parts). One model --
    many configurations.

New Way: 100 configurations means 100 separate part files.

Am I the only one who finds this annoying.........

SW was instrumental in popularizing the use of configurations and then
they go and eviserate (sp) this functionality in one of their own
    products...

Would go a long way to explain why the site isn't as popular as it
    could be.........

    Len (big sigh)

    Rant (resignation) over.......

Solution: When user selects model format (SW Part/Assembly)-- in
addition to asking what version -- the user should be queried if they
want a single part configuration or all of them.

  2. Automation = productivity = business = profits..?

    Mo-money, mo-time, mo-bugs, mo-regressions, mo-sp's, mo-Er's,
    mo-promises,.. mo-business, mo-money.

Ya gotta luv the business plan. How can I help you too help me... too
    help you... (repeat with subscription)?

Sorry, a bit OT but this little blunder reminds me the small things that
make up the whole and people who are in the business (marketing
    assholes) to make mo-business.

Can I get a amen brother!...?

    ... ;^)

  4. Len,

I hate to correct your grammar as I find it somewhat insulting, but
    please understand my motivation.

Your title "Re: OT : 3D Content Central Rant (What were they
    thinking)" is gramatically incorrect.

I believe that you incorrectly punctuated the "What were they
    thinking" portion of the title.

Please note my updated version of your title fragment:

    "WHAT? WERE THEY THINKING?"

    The obvious answer is "NO"

I feel sorely disappointed in the one config output as well.

Configs are what solidworks excels at.

Please mark me down as "Down With The Revolution".

    Regards,

    SMA

The revolution will not be televised, but luckily you will be able to
download it piece-by-piece until you have every variant that you need
    .. . .

(for those among us who think I would actually deign to correct the
grammar of another, please refer to any of my former post, eloquently
infused wiht split infinitives, misspelled works and participles that
    be danglin'.)

I can see why they ignore it if you sent it in the same terms you posted
here. I sent them an email that said roughly the same thing in somewhat
different language, and got a helpful and diplomatic response.

    Hi Matt,

What you point out is valid, and I agree with you. Here’s where we stand.

Multiple parts in one download – this is a scheduled project and will be
available before the end of the year.

Download models with all configs – as you know 3D ContentCentral is powered
by 3D PartStream.NET (3DPS) which itself has SolidWorks as its core. At
the moment 3DPS does not allow models to be downloaded with all
configurations because most of the supplier models have literally millions
of possible configurations. A simple example of a socket head cap screw
with all the head treatments, lengths, and thread lengths is over 10,000
configs. Also, many supplier components use sophisticated configuration
rules, that currently, we can’t easily deliver. So we believe our reason
for not allowing downloads with all configs was justified. Now having said
that, we also believe, based on feedback from users such as yourself and
suppliers, that there should be an option to download models with all
configs. We are working on that functionality and it will be available
    later this year.

Thanks for your feedback and keep it coming.

    Best regards,
(name removed to protect the innocent)

  6. Hi Matt.

I'm glad someone has the inside scoop. Looks like they have a
    solution lined up.
I percieve this to be a bit of an overstatement. I wonder how true
this is. I think he must be talking about possible modulations of
size, but actual configurations in the model(?).
Alternately, this is very true. Frighteningly true.

Some of these many configs as you well know can add megs of data,
which makes transmission hellish. Hopefully once they implement the
"all configs" options, we can all piss and moan about making this a
requester-specifyable-switch (single config, all configs or
    list-selectable). Yeah, that's the ticket.

I hope life is treating you well.

    Later,

    SMA

    Matt,

I wasn't asking SW to pay attention :)
I was "letting off steam".... hence my tongue in cheek "rant on" and
"rant off" delimiters and the OT (Off topic) in the subject header.

However, after cooling off several days I did contact SW and got a
similiar response from them as you did.

It was a feeble attempt to inject some humour into my situation
(remember the - "as long as you can still laugh about it...."

Obviously I shouldn't attempt to be funny when I'm annoyed.....

Cheers and thanks for the feedback.

    SMA,

No offense taken. But the section on your dangling participles is
wayyyyyyyyyy more information than I needed to know........
