Newbie needs some Titleblock help

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by k2 \(certifiable\), Jan 21, 2007.

  1. Hi to all.

I am new to solidworks have been using inventor. I have been trying unsuccessfully to
insert my customers title block into my drawing file. Can anyone please direct me to where
I can find the procedure for doing this?

    Thanks, Joe

Title blocks in Solidworks are called "sheet formats".
If you import your customer's title block from a dwg/dxf file then you can
"save / sheet format" which prompts you to save it as a new file. This
sheet format can then be used for new or existing drawings, but you have to
tell Solidworks where to find it.

Go to "tools/options/file locations" and pick "sheet formats" from the drop
down list. Either note where your existing ones are stored and move the
newly created one into the same place, or add the folder where it is
currently stored as an additional location.

When you create a new drawing, the dialogue box that pops up should allow
you to pick the new sheet format from a list.
If you wish to change an existing drawing, then RMB on the "sheet" in the
Feature Manager Tree and select properties. This brings up the same
dialogue box as when creating a drawing.

You need a different sheet format for each sheet size.

This is a bit of house keeping but something that I have done has been
to create a directory for each version of SW. This starts to look like
this: C:\SW2005, C:\SW2006, C:\SW2007 etc. Then under these
drectories I make a sub directory for each project. But, I also add
    the following directories: \backup, \blocks, \templates, \design
library and copy everything from the previous version. This helps keep
everything isolated between versions. Origionally I copied all of the
default SW title blocks into my \templates directory so that al of the
choices would be in one stop. I also COPY the projects files that need
to be upgraded to the new version. Ie. I don't take up the disk space
for the older projects but this is dependent upon a lot of things.

So, once I have all the new title blocks, (which are in \templates
directory) and the standard title blocks in the same directory the
previous post explains how to customize the files directory so that SW
knows where to find all of these. Then when a new title block from
customers are added there is a system for keeping tack of where to
point SW to find them. And when SW 2008 shows up then this process
will guarantee that everything is sent forward.

BTW, I have found it fairly easy to edit a SW standard title block and
save it as a new name then to try to start from scratch.

    Hope this helps,
