New to SW. How can I mirror a part, and break the relationships so I
can add features to the original that won't show up on the mirrored
    copy

You can specify which config to mirror in the mirrored part.

Or to completely break the relationship so it will never change you can RMB
on the Referenced part feature in the Mirrored part and select List External
References and in the dialog break all. THIS CAN NOT BE UNDONE! you have
    been warned. =^)

on the mirrored part, lock external references.

  5. To clarify, the advantage to using the lock, rather than breaking the
external relations, is that you can, if you wish, unlock the references so
that the mirrored part can be updated to match the modified original.

Personally, I would probably go with the configurations, since that gives
you the most flexibility. Configurations also cause the most confusion,
though, and complex configurations seem to be related to crashing.

  6. Yes, you can do this using "Save bodies" or "Save Assembly" and get
what you want without breaking associative features with the original
part. Why would you ever want to break association? Arrrgghhh!
These are derive features that are part of the history of the FM. For
instance, you can make a mirror copy of your body and "save bodies" on
it to derive it out, then keep working on the original body (past the
Save Bodies feature) without any of the features affecting the derived
part (save bodies feature). This perhaps, get to the heart of the
original question (or intend underneath the question): how do you
share geometry between to mirrored parts and add unique features to
each of them (past a certain point) without affecting each of them
    individually.

This, BTW, is a brilliant feature of UGS NX's WAVE concept. Something
that they call "TimeStamping" but since "Save Bodies" and "Save
Assembly" we can essentially do the same in SW.
