OK, here's what i want to accomplish. I would like to take a clipart file (jpg, gif, etc.) or scanned image of free-hand drawings (black and white line art) and have AutoSketch create or copy those lines into a new drawing with out having to do anything to it except clean it up a little so I can export in DXF and use the resulting coordinate file in a cnc engraving program. As it is I'm inserting a bitmap file and having to use a multi-segment polyline to completely trace the bitmap and then i still have to remove the bitmap and clean up the new drawing. What a pain in the ass! I don't use the sketch command because it's so limited in the number of vertices. Oh, BTW, The resulting drawing has to be one continuous line for the cnc software.

Example: sign my name in cursive, scan that piece of paper, import into AutoSketch and have it reproduce, or mimic that line into a drawing without tracing it.

No choice to do what you're already doing.....tracing over the image.
Raster & vector don't like each other....!!!

There are programs out there that can convert raster (.jpg, .bmp etc) into
vector....some are cheap, some are expensive, some work, some don't work. I
use Able Software R2V which works adequately, albiet some cleaning up of the
    conversion is required.

Another option is to create the original line art in a vector based graphics
programs such as Adobe Illustrator which can then be saved directly as a
    ..dxf.

We have a some customers using a package called Scan2Cad
(www.softocver.com ) which seems to work quite well for their cnc needs. It
    costs about £150.
