I have important PDF files but I can’t copy or edit text, how do I remove restrictions safely?

I received a few PDF documents from my office and clients, but they are locked for copying and editing. I need to extract some content and make small changes for my work. Is there any safe way or tool to unlock these PDFs without damaging the file or losing formatting?

 

This usually happens when the PDF has security permissions enabled. Even if you can open the file, the owner may have disabled copy, edit or print options. That’s why you can’t directly select text or make changes.

If the password is known, the simplest manual way is using a PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader. Open the file, go to Properties Security, and check if “permission password” is set. If you have access, sometimes you can save a copy as “Print to PDF,” which removes basic restrictions.
