Encounter: rdaInit.tcl failed

Discussion in 'Cadence' started by Andrew Greensted, Dec 7, 2005.

  1. Hi All,

I'm 'attempting' to run encounter on a gentoo based machine. I realise
this isn't officially supported, but it would be nice if it worked (I
    prefer it over redhat).

I'm getting the following error when starting encounter. Just wondering
    if anyone had any ideas?

    --- Running on XXXXXX (i686 w/Linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r2) ---

  2. Roger, thanks for the feedback. I see you're running a 2.4 kernel.
However, I doubt that's got anything to do with it.
Just wondering, when was the last time you did an system update. I guess
an emerge -uD world would break the installation.

  3. That path does exist. I installed SOC into:
    /opt/cadence-2005/soc-4.1-usr5/

I've installed the solaris version in the exact same location (but of
course on a sun) and it's quite happy.

  4. Aha, that makes things far more interesting. I wonder if I'm just
    missing a dependency somewhere....

    - Do you run encounter with an ENCOUNTER environment variable set (or in
    fact any other special variables)?

    - Did you have to emerge anything special to get it working?

Would you mind emailing me your world file (/var/lib/portage/world)?

  5. Hi,

not sure if you still have that problem, but just in case.

Some time back I ran into the same issue on a Fedora installation. In my
case it was related to the fonts I had set in KDE. I believe I was using
"Sans Serif" when I got the same error as you. Once I switched back to
"Helvetia" it was fine again. Fonts are fairly non-standard among
distributions, but you may want to experiment with different fonts.

  6. KDE 3.5, Encounter V04.10, Gentoo Linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r5

Johannes, fantastic, that did the trick. Many thanks for the pointer.
I had the font set to Nimbus Sans. As you say, after changing it to
Helvetica, encounter started up without problems.

After a little more tweaking it seems that it was 'Window Title' font
that was stopping encounter starting. I've set this to 'Arial Bold' and
Encounter is quite happy with that.

The only (small) problem I have now, is increasing the font size used in
the menus, it's tiny!! Any suggestions?

    Thanks again
    Andy

  7. I had the same problem, the top-level menu was looking okay, but the items
in the pull-down menu and dialog boxes were tiny. This is something KDE is
doing, because the same items look just fine in "failsafe" mode.

I was able to fix it by setting a large font for "Window title". I use
"Helvetica 9" for everything, and "Helvetica 12" for "Window title". Now all
my window titles are kind of large, but my SOCE menus are back to regular
size, looking exactly as under Solaris. So you may want to try just upping
the font size of "Window Title".

    Best Regards,
