Having the electronic dwg is a big difference. If they have a copy, then
issue it's one thing, but if they can make changes to it..... In general we
try to discourage clients from copying the signed plans, we can't forbid it
of course but once I explain our reservations it's usually not a big deal.

I also agree with the possiblility of someone copying the stamp.

In this area, we cannot use an electronically produced seal so not a big
    deal here....just pondering the consequences.

I want to see OC give a job with 1000's of drawing to his PE to wet stamp and sign!<<

More like 8-10 PEs and we don't issue the drawings all at once. The most any PE will see at any given time is a couple dozen.

And yes, if and when we send out e-files it is removed<<<

Is it a block in the TB or a nested XREF? It only takes one knock-up and the PE has lost control of his stamp.

  5. In my neck of the woods I have seen e-stamp on dwgs allot with no issue. The
stamp is invalid with out a genuine sig crossed it, the stamp is black and
the sig is required to be in blue ink. If no sig the stamp is invalid. I
    see no problem.

    If they'll steal a stamp, they'll forge a sig.

  7. Well I believe that would be illegal? Punishable by law? I don't believe I
know anyone that would put there business in jeopardy for something like
    that.

Just fell off the turnip truck or what? I've seen managers who wanted to pry open the PE's desk drawer while he was on vacation to get his stamp. Granted this guy was an idiot and destined for unemployment, but idiots populate much of the planet. And for scruples, can you say "ENRON"?

  9. Well without the signature the stamp does no good? Enron? Where are they
    today? (that was my point)

Yea, if I get a look at one of your PE's stamp I can draw one in a
heartbeat. Or if I have a copy of it on paper I can even have a rubber stamp
    made.

the PE has lost control of his stamp.

You guys are talking round in circles.
The reality is if a person is prepared to break the law for project
expediency, there is little that can stop him. Until he is caught and
    prosecuted.
This has no bearing what so ever on wether it is better to have the approval
stamp as part of the title block or not.

For the record, all the places I've worked have had a not-valid-till-signed
approval stamp as part of the title block. And that includes the days when
we used film with pre printed title blocks.
Also, in my neck of the woods, having company contact details on the drawing
is seen as very important for two reasons.
    1. The guy doing the installation can pick up his cell phone and ring the
guy who did the design if he has a problem/query/finds a mistake/does not
    understand/it doesn't fit/etc.
    2. For marketing purposes. If a potential customer sees one of our drawings,
and wants what he sees, or something similar, our contact details are
    starring him in the face.

Here's the rub. I did a quick check of several of the state codes where we do business, in each there is a statute that requires the holder of the stamp to take every reasonable precaution to protect that stamp. Failure to do so can result in the revocation of that stamp. The PE may lose his license.

Talking with several of the PEs here, they read that as prohibiting the placement of electronic stamps on any file that could possibly be transfered out of our control. Our legal department agrees.

If you and yours see it differently or feel the risk is acceptable, then by all means carry on. We, however, decline.
