Dim creation display in 2002

    Hi All
    Would appreciate help with this change in my drafting
    Up till recently I used dim tool to put on dimensions- as i clicked on the various parts of the drawing the dimension would appear to help with positioning it amongst all the other stuff on the drawing.
    Now this has mysteriously changed, no longer do i see the dim other than for a split second appearance - so now having to guess, position it then relocate it to best position, rather irritating an extra command

    Any ideas what i have done to create/lose this function?
    And how to restore back to it's 'normal' display... been using AutoCAD 2002 for years - on this machine for 1 year without having had this issue
    Currently on Windows 10 on a PC
