    Hi there
im currently studying an HNC in CADD in the UK and use mainly AutoCAD
    software.
Im just wondering what sort of duties a CAD technician carries out. does it
usually involve drafting or programming and maintaining a CAD system.

I just drive the machine.....programming and maintenance is the 'IT'
    guys job.

Working for a smaller company is a bonus for me as it brings in a
variety of work in the petro-chemical industry. Anything from site
visits for measure-ups/as builts through to cross country pipelines,
pressure vessels and structural steel (frame, platforms etc.)

    Good luck

In architecture a CAD technician usually works with the architect helping
draft all of the details, schedules and component drawings for a building
but the job can extend to visiting sites, doing meetings, meeting
consultants, if fact everything the architect does if youre good enough. CAD
technicians dont usually touch the workings of the CAD machine or computer
programing - most firms have a dedicated IT bloke for that.

    thanks everybody for the feedback

im more involved with the architectural side of CAD
but im thinking about maybe trying other disciplines,
like engineering or electrical & mechanincal CAD design.
I suppose the sky is the limit, like roy said!

    thanks again
