since when are being morally correct and doing the right thing "blind
idealism"? You have yet to post any "truth" that I can see...

I wrote my University entrance essay on the subject, I agree that it is this
exact change that is the cause of the degradation seen in society. I can see
the change around me which means that it's likely happening in other places
    as well.
I'm pretty sure he didn't start a piracy discussion, but it developed into
one. I was speaking more to the training of his comrade.

....If you are worried about me then don't look up.

    I feel sorry for
Do you? I'm touched. The truth is hard to swallow but it is still the
truth none the less. Following blind idealism will get us nowhere.

*wondering how this progressed so far...

That is probably the best analogy I have ever read! Anyways this point
It is theft, but things are hardly that black and white.

    If you
    Even so it was humourous...
    Fair enough.

Blind idealism would be the thought that because you do the right thing,
that others will or should do the same because you deem it correct. I own a
license for AutoCAD 2004 and I don't see any problems with students having a
pirated student license to learn on. If I just spent 40k in the US for
school(Guessing as Canadian education is subsidized by provincial taxes.)
the last thing I would want is to do buy an expensive platform to advance my
skills. Furthermore if the student is taking an
Architectural/Electrical/What have you, program they purchased a temp.
license already through tuition for the semester. They could transfer the
license to their version at home and that would be legal. They might even
get a pirated copy so that they don't have to transfer the liscence, which I
find to be a hassle. They still possess a license and obviously can't be on
    two computers at once.

I think I've made my point and see no further purpose in pursuing this
thread as we each have our own opinions and like my peer designers we seem
to be stuborn to no end :)

Really...who cares what Joe Blow does with his software or where he gets
it from? If you know he's using pirated software what are you going to do
call the cops? Suppose you did, do you think they would prosecute? Suppose
they did would you get a citizen of the year award? Would AutoDesk give you
a big fat reward for being a corporate rat? Would it make your miserable,
purposeless life more meaningful? Would it make you feel better about
    spending that $3000?
If there was no piracy at all in this world do you think AutoDesk would
charge less for their software....say maybe $2995? I'm not condoning piracy
or criticizing it. I'm simply saying what benefit can be got by not minding
your own business? If America learned to mind theirs there would be a lot
less for them to worry about and that translates to a personal level too.

Right then... You paid the $3000 (yeah right) and how much money has
that softwar emade for you? OK then you expect someone 'playinjg
around' to shell out for it too? not gonna happen. I used copies of
adobe stuff until I had somewhat of an idea what I was doing, got some
freelance work and PAID FOR THE SOFTWARE. So **** you guys that some
beginners should pay for acad 04, then pay for and upgrade to 05 and
then 06 and after spending $10k on software get a $40/Yr job. You're
stupid. Beginners don't usually get to practice at work. Thanks to the
few who were good enough to offer links to some training for the guy,
afterall that's what this freakin' roll of toilet paper started out as.

  13. Sorry to have caused a piracy thread to pop up. I actually did buy him a
new copy (well actually my parents paid for most of it). His dad helped
my dad out in a similar situation many years ago (got my dad a job
that was probably better than what he was qualified for at the time) and
my dad thought it would be nice to help repay some of the favor to his son
now that his dad has passed away. Anyway, that was not the point of this
thread. I appreciate the free sites. I had my friend look at them and he
is really learning a lot. I believe he will be alright now, though,
because my dad has offered to make him interest free loans so that he can
go to school. I don't think my dad actually plans to let him repay him
(he seems to be just wanting to make sure he is willing to make the effort
on his own) and so everything should work out now. Thanks again to
    everyone for your help.

That's really cool! I had a young employee some years ago that wanted to
go out on his own but could not afford AutoCAD. So I loaned him the
money to buy it and told him he could repay me whenever he made some
money and could afford to. He paid me back in payments and it took him 4
years. He is now very successful, still using Acad, owns a nice home,
has a great wife and two kids. I'm glad I could help him get going. Good
for you and your Dad too!!
