I want to move old DBX mailbox data into PST, but I also need control over where the new PST file is saved. The file should be easy to find later and should not overwrite my original DBX backup.

Yes, you can save DBX emails into PST at your chosen folder location but it depends on the conversion method you use. Manual routes may not give much control, especially when the DBX files are copied from an old Outlook Express backup.

Before conversion, create a separate working copy of your DBX files and keep the original folder safe. After the PST is created, open it in Microsoft Outlook and check whether emails, attachments, dates and folder names are showing correctly.

If choosing the output path matters, this safe tool, Softaken DBX to PST Converter Software is a good option to try because it lets users select the DBX file, preview mailbox data and save the PST file locally in the preferred folder.

Test one backup folder first, review the sample PST in Outlook, and continue only when the emails look correct.
