Bind xrefs - one layer thaws

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by Greg McLandsborough, Sep 16, 2003.

  1. I have a routine that binds xrefs, as saveas them to an outgoing directory.
Problem is, that when I bind (insert) the xref on layer that is frozen in
the veiwports thaws. Is not the current layer in either the Xref or the
drawing. Does anyone know why this happens ???

    Thanks

  2. A Bind, Insert "flattens" the layer name, removing the XRef portion of the
layer name. The viewports themselves cannot track that renaming of the
    layer.

  3. The XRef layer is not renamed (because it's not in the current
drawing). The bind layers are new and AutoCAD does not properly
translate references to XREF layers into references to the
    corresponding layers created by BIND.

You can do it yourself however.

  4. The view ports track every other layer, its just one layer that is thaw..
    quite spookie really..

  5. If you have a layer named 'Layer1' in your drawing and the Xref has
a layer with the same name then if you bind the Xref with the insert
option both layers are merged into one layer. That means that the Xref
layer will loose all the properties which were different from the layer
in your base drawing (color, linetype, on/off frozen/thawed status and so on).
BTW if you have different blocks with the same name in both drawings, then
the Xref block will be replaced by the block from the base drawing.
The same is true for textstyles and dimstyles.

This is why binding Xrefs with the insert option is very dangerous,
in our office its an absolutely NoNo. If you want to be sure that
your drawings remain the same you should not use the insert option.

  6. Stephen,

Thanks kindly, that is the exact reason this occurs, obvious really.

    Cheers
