Having persevered with my Epson Stylus 1520, I finally THREW it out
    yesterday,
in desperation . Very nice prints with much subtlety of colour when you
actually got one but for everyone that was good, there were a dozen+ bad
    ones/misfeeds.

The question is what to replace it with? I have an HP A0 plotter but need an
A3+ colour printer for day to day proofing/working prints/presentations etc.
Any recommendations? I don't want to spend much more than $800.

I have just purchased a HP 9650, Mainly for plotting A3 Cad but also general office printing, So far so good, print quality is good (good enough for me anyway) but i have only had it a week so I guess time will tell.

THANKS for the suggestion. The 9650 and the 2600 series had caught my eye.
The downside to the 2600 is its 1200 x 600 dpi resolution compared to 1400 x
700 dpi for the binned Epson 1520 and to 4800 x 1200 dpi of the 9650. The
advantage is the 2 tray capability. I'll see if I can get some sample
    prints.

    Thanks again

No worries i also looked at the 2600 series, Extra tray would be nice just couldn't justify the price difference
